Adhesion Molecules of Leukocyte Trafficking :
Integrins
Integrins are a b heterodimeric transmembrane glycoproteins and are expressed on a variety of cells including endothelial cells and leukocytes (Hynes, 1992). Integrins found on the surface of monocytes include, VLA-4, leukocyte function associated antigen-1 (LFA-1), and a 4 b 7 . Members of the immunoglobulin superfamily serve as their ligands on cytokine-activated endothelial cells and include VCAM-1, intercellular adhesion molecules-1 and -2 (ICAM-1, ICAM-2), and mucosal addressin cellular adhesion molecule-1 (MAdCAM-1) (Wang and Springer, 1998).
